The Baltimore Orioles had a historic season in 1966 in Major League Baseball (MLB). Led by their legendary manager, Earl Weaver, the Orioles dominated the competition and captured their first-ever World Series championship. This unforgettable season was highlighted by the Orioles’ outstanding pitching staff, powerful offense, and stellar defense.
The Orioles finished the regular season with an impressive record of 97-63, winning the American League (AL) pennant by a comfortable margin. The team’s pitching staff was the best in the league, led by future Hall of Famers Jim Palmer and Robin Roberts, along with hard-throwing reliever Stu Miller. This formidable pitching staff helped the Orioles allow the fewest runs in the AL during the regular season.
On the offensive side, the Orioles were led by All-Star first baseman Boog Powell, who had a breakout season, hitting 34 home runs and driving in 109 runs. Powell was supported by the likes of Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, who won his second consecutive Gold Glove Award that season for his exemplary defense at third base, and All-Star outfielder Frank Robinson, who won the AL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for his outstanding season, hitting 49 home runs and driving in 122 runs.
In the World Series, the Orioles faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had won the National League (NL) pennant. The Orioles made quick work of the Dodgers, sweeping them in four games to capture their first-ever World Series title. The Orioles’ dominant pitching staff held the Dodgers to just two runs in the entire series, with Jim Palmer winning two games and earning World Series MVP honors.
